First Impressions of iPhone 5S

iPhone 5S Gold

Apple uncovered iPhone 5S on September 10th, 2013. The external appearance of new iPhone resembles to that of iPhone 5, which was no surprise. But the similarities end there, internals of new phone are completely different from previous generation iPhone. Apple claims that with its new 64-bit processor, 5S will be twice as fast as the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5S Space Grey

iPhone 5S has same aluminum two-tone back as that of the iPhone 5. The phone is now available in three colour options Silver, Space Grey and Gold. On the front is the 4-inch Retina display with pixel density of 326ppi, and screen resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels. The Home button is redesigned for the first time since the first iPhone back in 2007, it is now flat than all previous generation iPhones and has a steel ring around it. The phone is still very thin and with the weight of just 112 grams, it feels great in the hands.

Apple A7 processoriPhone 5S features Apple’s latest 64-bit A7 processor which is the biggest leap by any company in the smartphone industry. Apple says the A7 processor will give 5S double the speed compared to iPhone 5, which still is a fast smartphone in the market. Coupled with the A7 is the new motion co-processor  M7 chip. This chip monitors various sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and it processes the data without assistance from A7 chip, thus saving phone’s energy.

The battery of iPhone 5S is increased to 1570mAh from 1440mAh of iPhone 5. According to Apple this increased battery with the new A7 processor delivers 10 hours of 3G talk time, 8 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of LTE and Wi-Fi browsing, up to 10 hours of video playback, up to 40 hours music playback and up to 250 hours of Standby time. However we will have to wait and see how the battery performs in real life usage.

Touch ID

Next big thing in the iPhone 5S is Fingerprint reader called “Touch ID”. This sensor sits under the home button and stores your fingerprint, so you can unlock the phone and make iTunes purchases by just touching the home button. You can even scan multiple fingerprints on your iPhone. Your fingerprints will be locally stored on A7 processor and will not be sent over the internet or stored on Apple servers. This is a huge leap in mobile security.

iPhone iSight cameraThe rear camera on the iPhone 5S has 8MP sensor. The size of sensor is increased by 15% and a wider f/2.2 aperture that lets in more light, which means it will take much more detailed pictures and will have higher low-light performance. The camera has Burst mode with 10 pictures per second and 120fps Slo-mo video capability, which means you can shoot and edit slow motion videos right from your main camera.

Another feature added to the new phone is True Tone Flash. The phone has 2 LED flash which according to the scene produces right amount of light, so that low-light pictures show true colours and reduces noise.

In the front, the phone has 1.2MP 720p at 30fps FaceTime camera with backlight illumination for clearer video calls.

16GB iPhone 5S will be priced at $199, 32GB at $299 and 64GB at $399 for a standard 2 year U.S contract. Unsubsidized phones will be priced at $549 for 16GB, $649 for 32GB and $749 for 64GB. iPhone 5S will be available from 20th September in 10 countries and will reach 100 countries till December 2013, according to Apple.

Stay tuned for our full review and real life performance test of the iPhone 5S.

Great post. I think I’m going to upgrade to the 5s in a month or so, and I’m really stoked about it!
